The Wines of Nicholas Potel
Nicolas Potel Pommard 1er Cru 'Les Rugiens' 2005 Tasting Notes: "(Somewhat surprisingly, this is even more elegant. I say surprisingly because Pézerolles is arguably the most elegant wine in all of Pommard. Be that as it may, the cool, refined and airy red pinot fruit nose intermingles with notably bigger and more powerful flavors though the supporting tannins are slightly less sophisticated, all wrapped in a longer and better balanced finish. Lovely and very Rugiens." Food Match: white meats, turkey, salmon, roasts, pork, grilled meats, duck, chicken. Regular Price: $99.99 |
Nicolas Potel Savigny-Les Beaune AC 'Vieilles Vignes' 2005 Tasting Notes: "This is a picture perfect Savigny nose as the pungent iron-infused earth infuses the wines from start to finish as the very fresh and densely fruited nose is in keeping with the vibrant and punchy flavors that finish with a bit of an edge that may or may not round off. It's a reasonable assumption that it will however as the underlying material appears quite ripe." Food Match: white meats, veal, roasts, pork, grilled meats, duck, beef.

Nicolas Potel Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Teurons' 2005 Tasting Notes: "Good deep, full red. Black cherry complicated by smoke and dark chocolate on the nose. Sweet, sappy, fat and seamless, with very ripe red fruit and earth flavors. Sweet tannins are buried in fruit on the chewy finish. I like the balance of tannins and acids here." Food Match: white meats, veal, roasts, pork, pheasant, grilled meats, fowl, duck.

Nicolas Potel Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru "Aux Echanges" 2005Tasting Notes: The 2006 vintage shows fresh, crisp, red berry aromas and good depth on the palate, with marked acidity and a "classic" structure, all characters of the 2006 vintage. Food Match: white meats, veal, roasts, pork, fowl, duck, chicken. Regular Price: $89.99Mills' Customer Appreciation Card Price: $49.99 |
Nicolas Potel Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2006 Tasting Notes: "Saturated ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, black cherry, licorice, bitter chocolate and pungent spices. Offers a penetrating, sappy kirsch flavor on the palate, in a rather dense, powerful style. This is powerful without coming across as heavy. Finishes very long and spicy, with terrific freshness." -Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Mar.-Apr. 2007 Food Match: white meats, turkey, roasts, pork, lamb. Regular Price: $199.99Mills' Customer Appreciation Card Price: $136.99 |
Nicolas Potel Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2006Tasting Notes: A completely different nose this is deeply and more animale with red berry fruit that is also trimmed in a bit of wood spice that dissolves into supple, fresh and attractively textured flavors that are really quite fine for a young Clos de la Roche if perhaps not as complex as one might hope for. Score 90-92 - Burghound January, 2008 Food Match: white meats, turkey, roasts, pork, lamb. Regular Price: $179.99Mills' Customer Appreciation Card Price: $95.99 |
Nicolas Potel Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2006Tasting Notes: "An elegant, pure and reserved, spicy, cool and layered red fruit nose nuanced by hints of wood toast that are also picked up on the mineral-driven and highly complex flavors that possess really lovely intensity, balance and outstanding length. This is perhaps not quite as dense or powerful as the Mazoyères but the sense of harmony and overall class and breed are better still. In sum, this is very impressive."92-94 pts. Food Match: white meats, turkey, pork, lamb, fowl, duck. Regular Price: $319.99Mills' Customer Appreciation Card Price: $171.99 |
Nicolas Potel Chambertin Grand Cru 2006Tasting Notes: "Deep red-ruby; less saturated than the last few samples. Reduced, vinous nose hints at pungent wild red fruits, minerals, smoked meat and tobacco. Silky and fine-grained; boasts a spherical shape that few wines of this vintage-or any other-can match. This has a wonderfully suave palate feel and coats every square millimeter of the palate. The texture of liquid silk carries through on the extremely long, layered finish." Food Match: white meats, venison, veal, pork, pheasant, game, fowl, duck, chicken. Regular Price: $259.99Mills' Customer Appreciation Card Price: $159.99 |
Nicolas Potel Clos St.-Denis Grand Cru 2006Tasting Notes: A very ripe yet beautifully fresh nose offers up elegant aromas of dark berry fruit trimmed in a bit of discreet wood spice leads to mouth coating and exceptionally rich flavors that drench the palate with buckets of dry extract on the textured and velvety finish. This is a relatively big Clos St. Denis that delivers outstanding length on the powerful and very firmly structured finale. Recommended. Score 91-93 - Burghound, January 2008 Food Match: veal, turkey, roasts, pate, duck Regular Price: $139.99Mills' Customer Appreciation Card Price: $86.99 |
Nicolas Potel Echezeaux Grand Cru 2006Tasting Notes: "A very spicy and seductive black fruit nose reveals undertones of earth and even a hint of game that can also be found on the powerful, big, rich and robust flavors that possess real size and weight, especially in the context of the 2006 vintage that delivers more spice on the sappy and admirably long finish. This is an impressively-scaled Ech and while not necessarily an elegant wine, there is plenty of character and mid-palate concentration." 91-93 pts. Regular Price: $189.99 Mills' Customer Appreciation Card Price: $136.99 |
Nicolas Potel Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2004Tasting Notes: "Medium red. Blackberry, dried cherry, licorice, mint and pepper on the nose; conveys a slight overripe/underripe character. Juicy and penetrating but a bit youthfully imploded, with a medicinal cast to the fruit. This firmly structured wine finishes with slightly dry tannins and a peppery quality." 89+ points. -Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Mar.-Apr. 2007 Food Match: turkey, roasts, pheasant, lamb, duckRegular Price: $149.99 Mills' Customer Appreciation Card Price: $89.99 |
| Nicolas Potel Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru 2004 Tasting Notes: Deep, saturated red. Extravagant, high-toned aromas of blackberry, black licorice, gamr, sweet oak and earth. Rather wild and youthfully agressive; in a distinctly virile style for the year. Showing more spine than flesh today, and yet the precision and grip of this wine are already apparent. -Stephen Tanzer Food Match: veal, turkey, fowl, duck, chicken.Regular Price: $149.99 Mills' Customer Appreciation Card Price: $89.99 |
